{"id":416,"date":"2014-10-15T12:01:59","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T19:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/?p=416"},"modified":"2014-10-15T12:01:59","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T19:01:59","slug":"learning-a-new-trick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/?p=416","title":{"rendered":"Learning a new trick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every now and then I need to learn a new trick.\u00c2\u00a0 Not just learning a new thing &#8211; that happens every day (or it should).\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, something that challenges my brain and hands in a new way.\u00c2\u00a0 Husband and I are very much in step on this point.\u00c2\u00a0 Both of us are nearly always tinkering with something new.<\/p>\n<p>There is a club chair that I have been carrying around with me from apartment to apartment and house to house.\u00c2\u00a0 The chair used to live with my great-grandparents, where I have fond memories of huge family gatherings (with four generations under one roof, they were naturally large gatherings) and playing in their front yard while my great-grandmother supervised from the porch.\u00c2\u00a0 It was my great-grandfather&#8217;s chair for TV watching.\u00c2\u00a0 I remember it being super cozy and curling up in the seat for a snooze on Christmas Eve when the adults were taking too long to put us to bed.\u00c2\u00a0 I was in college when I inherited the chair.\u00c2\u00a0 (My great-grandparents enjoyed a very long life together!)\u00c2\u00a0 It was very well-loved by that point, so it sat under a slipcover in my living room for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Until the moving day where it rained.\u00c2\u00a0 It was inevitable, you know.\u00c2\u00a0 When you&#8217;ve moved 16 times in 21 years, there is bound to be a moving day that includes rain.\u00c2\u00a0 You know what happened next &#8211; the chair got wet.\u00c2\u00a0 Add the damp to its advanced age, and it became a health hazard.\u00c2\u00a0 Every time I sat in it I developed an allergic reaction.\u00c2\u00a0 And so the chair was exiled to whatever storage room was available at the time, waiting for the day that I had the resources to restore it to health and usefulness again.<\/p>\n<p>Now here&#8217;s where Husband comes in.\u00c2\u00a0 One day he said, &#8220;I&#8217;m signing you up for the upholstery class that starts this weekend.\u00c2\u00a0 We need to get that chair out of the garage.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 I enthusiastically agreed &#8211; it was time to reupholster the chair, and this class would help me do it.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only would I learn the techniques, but I would learn on my own chair (as opposed to one provided for the class).\u00c2\u00a0 It was three full Saturdays of tiring, backbreaking work.\u00c2\u00a0 But so worth it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_093344_clr_trm_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-417\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_093344_clr_trm_sm-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20140823_093344_clr_trm_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_093344_clr_trm_sm-300x239.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_093344_clr_trm_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Here&#8217;s the &#8220;before&#8221; photo on the first day of class.\u00c2\u00a0 Mom and I estimate that it was likely part of the home furnishings my great-grandparents purchased when they married and set up housekeeping in the 1920&#8217;s &#8211; 1930&#8217;s.\u00c2\u00a0 We also estimate that the chair was reupholstered sometime mid-century (before her memory, anyway) and that the fabric shown here was the &#8220;new&#8221; fabric at that time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_418\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_141021_clr_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-418\" class=\"wp-image-418 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_141021_clr_sm-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20140823_141021_clr_sm\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_141021_clr_sm-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140823_141021_clr_sm.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The blue striped fabric is assumed to be the original upholstery fabric. place among the rest of my possessions.\u00c2\u00a0 And now I can&#8217;t seem to put my hand on it.\u00c2\u00a0 Not to fear, it will turn up &#8211; my missing knitted shawl did.\u00c2\u00a0 Meanwhile, I purchased and installed two new front feet.\u00c2\u00a0 The one I removed is now safely included in the time capsule bag I stashed inside the dust cover on the bottom of the chair.\u00c2\u00a0 (Since I&#8217;ve publicly noted the location, hopefully this will prevent further &#8220;I can&#8217;t find it&#8230;&#8221; episodes.)\u00c2\u00a0 When I find it&#8217;s mate, they&#8217;ll be reinstalled instead of the new feet.<\/p>\n<p>The class instructor suggested the time capsule idea since the chair is a family heirloom.\u00c2\u00a0 I wrote a little note about the history of the chair, and included a bit of the two old fabrics I encountered during deconstruction.\u00c2\u00a0 This was zipped up in a bag with the front foot and wedged into the seat springs.\u00c2\u00a0 The next person to reupholster the chair should find it.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that&#8217;s me, as I expect to get many good years of use out of this chair, but I know that the fabric will wear out long before the chair and I do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140928_143053_clr_trm_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-424\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140928_143053_clr_trm_sm-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20140928_143053_clr_trm_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140928_143053_clr_trm_sm-300x207.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_20140928_143053_clr_trm_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I think it makes a fine addition to the knitting station.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every now and then I need to learn a new trick.\u00c2\u00a0 Not just learning a new thing &#8211;
