{"id":854,"date":"2016-05-13T13:26:42","date_gmt":"2016-05-13T20:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/?p=854"},"modified":"2016-05-13T13:26:42","modified_gmt":"2016-05-13T20:26:42","slug":"no-time-to-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/?p=854","title":{"rendered":"No Time To Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever encountered one of <em>those<\/em> weeks, where <em>everything<\/em> sort of piles on itself and there is no time to catch a breath?\u00c2\u00a0 I know you have.\u00c2\u00a0 Everybody has.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, that&#8217;s what happened to the last several weeks.\u00c2\u00a0 Mom came into town for a visit over Mother&#8217;s Day.\u00c2\u00a0 It was fabulous and we had a wonderful time.\u00c2\u00a0 But that meant I was prepping the house, prepping to be off work for a week, then all of the glorious visiting, then recharging.\u00c2\u00a0 (As an introvert, I know the recharging bit is necessary.\u00c2\u00a0 I just didn&#8217;t know I&#8217;d need multiple days of it.)\u00c2\u00a0 I think I&#8217;m out the other side now.\u00c2\u00a0 Which also means there&#8217;s lots of stuff to show you.\u00c2\u00a0 Because while my social side has been quiet, my hands have been very busy.<\/p>\n<p>I finished the miles of stockinette body on my <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/?p=847\" target=\"_blank\">experimental skirt<\/a>, then started the easily memorized lacy texture pattern around the bottom.\u00c2\u00a0 Can I tell you how much I love this lace pattern?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a perfect match for the image in my head of the finished skirt.\u00c2\u00a0 Knit flat, it is prone to biasing.\u00c2\u00a0 Knit in the round, it hangs perfectly straight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160429_142457_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-855\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160429_142457_sm-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160429_142457_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160429_142457_sm-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160429_142457_sm-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160429_142457_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Once the lace band was finished, I had a decision to make.\u00c2\u00a0 I could work a few rounds of garter stitch at the hem and bind off.\u00c2\u00a0 Or I could work a picot bind off at the hem, similar to the edging on my <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/?p=806\" target=\"_blank\">Lily shawl<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I decided to work the picot bind off.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m glad I did, even though that meant a seemingly endless amount of additional knitting.\u00c2\u00a0 Here it is in an unblocked state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134957_clr_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-856\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134957_clr_sm-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160511_134957_clr_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134957_clr_sm-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134957_clr_sm-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134957_clr_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>You know the first thing I did once the skirt was off the needles?\u00c2\u00a0 Yep.\u00c2\u00a0 I tried it on.\u00c2\u00a0 It fits!\u00c2\u00a0 The waistband is perfect, even without the elastic (though it will fit even better with this addition).\u00c2\u00a0 The length and weight of the fabric are perfect too.\u00c2\u00a0 And that lace band at the hem &#8211; including all those maddening picots! &#8211; is exactly as envisioned.\u00c2\u00a0 The only thing I&#8217;m not happy with is the rate of increase to get the shape.\u00c2\u00a0 It has turned out to be too sharp, and the hemline is wider than it needs to be.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the final skirt, laid out so you can see the full outline (again, it&#8217;s in an unblocked state so the hem is more ruffled than it will be once blocked).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134926_clr_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-857\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134926_clr_sm-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160511_134926_clr_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134926_clr_sm-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134926_clr_sm-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_134926_clr_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s not bad.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s just not what I&#8217;d envisioned.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what I really had in mind.\u00c2\u00a0 (No, I didn&#8217;t cut my knitting.\u00c2\u00a0 I folded in the sides a bit to get this photo.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_135037_clr_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-858\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_135037_clr_sm-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160511_135037_clr_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_135037_clr_sm-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_135037_clr_sm-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160511_135037_clr_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>See how it&#8217;s still an A-line shape, but less dramatic?\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what the image in my head looks like.<\/p>\n<p>So back to square one on that project.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve made adjustments to my notes for the next time I knit it.\u00c2\u00a0 My options are to rip this one and reknit it, or to just start from scratch with new yarn.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s going on the back burner until I decide.\u00c2\u00a0 There are other projects screaming for my attention at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>For the Knitters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pattern: I made it up<\/li>\n<li>Yarn: Lion Brand Sock-Ease Solids, colorway #178 Snow Cone<\/li>\n<li>Ravelry project page: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/projects\/TangledStrands\/waves-skirt\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most pressing new project was a pair of socks for Niece&#8217;s birthday.\u00c2\u00a0 As she too is growing at an alarming rate, I decided that they needed to be somewhat adjustable.\u00c2\u00a0 Tube socks fit that requirement, as there is no pesky heel to slip into the wrong position when the foot grows a little.\u00c2\u00a0 Since I procrastinated a bit and was uncomfortably close to the shipping deadline, I got out the circular sock machine (aka &#8220;Persnickety&#8221;) to help with the knitting.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Persnickety is rather fiddly when faced with knitting toes and heels &#8211; which is how she earned her name.\u00c2\u00a0 She drops stitches all over the place.\u00c2\u00a0 She also doesn&#8217;t do ribbing.\u00c2\u00a0 But she is a pro at knitting plain stockinette tubes.\u00c2\u00a0 Go with your strengths, right?\u00c2\u00a0 So, she knit the body of the socks and I knit the toes and cuffs.\u00c2\u00a0 She knit two perfect, 15&#8243; long tubes in about 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160505_132745_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-859\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160505_132745_sm-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160505_132745_sm\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160505_132745_sm-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160505_132745_sm.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I then picked out the shocking pink waste yarn at the top and bottom of each purple sock tube, put the stitches on two circular needles, and worked the toes and cuffs.\u00c2\u00a0 Voila!\u00c2\u00a0 A finished pair of socks, right on time for the birthday celebrations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160506_104544_clr_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-860\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160506_104544_clr_sm-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160506_104544_clr_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160506_104544_clr_sm-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160506_104544_clr_sm-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160506_104544_clr_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think I&#8217;ll be repeating that trick to fill up our sock drawers with plain, functional socks in future.\u00c2\u00a0 Though the adult versions will get heels inserted into the knitting too.<\/p>\n<p>For the Knitters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pattern: there isn&#8217;t one, use your favorite plain vanilla sock toe and 1&#215;1 ribbing for the cuffs<\/li>\n<li>Yarn: Premier Yarns Serenity Sock, colorway #DN108-01 Lavender Topaz<\/li>\n<li>Ravelry project page: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/projects\/TangledStrands\/persnicketys-socks\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For my spinning project, I decided to finally take the plunge and try out the big roll of 100% alpaca fiber that I picked up at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blacksheepgathering.org\" target=\"_blank\">Black Sheep Gathering<\/a> last summer.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a mash-up of all the little leftover bits from several of the alpaca fleeces the shop owner had spun up for her regular spinning fiber line.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s just the thing for testing out the fiber type before committing to the more expensive stuff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160423_105856_clr_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-861\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160423_105856_clr_sm-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160423_105856_clr_sm\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160423_105856_clr_sm-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160423_105856_clr_sm-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160423_105856_clr_sm.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The fiber is already attenuated into a smaller sliver, so it is ready to go.\u00c2\u00a0 I love the mix of colors; everything from the palest grey\/white, through the range of browns, to deep grey\/brown and almost-black.\u00c2\u00a0 Alpacas come in 20+ natural colors, and a good quantity of them are represented in this roll.\u00c2\u00a0 Here is how it is spinning up into the singles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160424_132127_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-862\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160424_132127_sm-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160424_132127_sm\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160424_132127_sm-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/blog.tangledstrands.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160424_132127_sm.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>The spinning is fast and easy, and the mix of colors is still there in the singles.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got 8 oz of fiber, so I&#8217;m planning to spin two bobbins and ply them together.\u00c2\u00a0 The finished 2-ply yarn should be lace weight or light fingering weight, depending on how much it blooms in the wash.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m a little low on knitting projects at the moment, with the skirt and socks finished, so this spinning project is getting a lot more attention.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s lots more to talk about, but I think that&#8217;s enough for one day.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s a project to rip out &#8211; but not the one you think &#8211; and cast on again.\u00c2\u00a0 I might need to cast on for two projects.\u00c2\u00a0 There needs to be a mix, after all.\u00c2\u00a0 And there&#8217;s more spinning to do.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a gorgeous day;
